Is recycling a duty and not a choice?

30th January 2012 Posted by

For those who watched the new BBC series Toughest place to be a bin man, you could not escape the irony of the slogan proudly painted on the side of the Hammersmith and Fulham Council refuse collection vehicle. It stated, ‘Recycling is a duty not a choice’. Well yes, perhaps it is in the cosseted world of central London. However,

I’m dreaming of a waste free Christmas

21st December 2011 Posted by

As Christmas closes in at an alarming rate, shops burgeon with produce for us to consume. It makes you wonder, where has the Government’s message of zero waste to landfill disappeared to? The ‘nudge theory’, which was borrowed by the Conservatives from the Obama administration, was a central ideological platform at the last election. The idea of ‘nudge’ is to incrementally push society towards positive behavioural change. However, as with the concept of the ‘big society’, it is perhaps ideological in its desire to reduce the activity of the State.

Mind the gap

7th July 2011 Posted by

I have been consistent with my messages over the past two years related to the inertia of waste planning decisions, the desperate need to find new sources of energy and the role that energy-from-waste could play in bridging the energy gap.
